okay so, I was going through an old notebook and I found a headcanon about Exiles and Carapaces that I wrote down forever ago but it is not a bad headcanon so let me tell you about my headcanon

so, Carapaces all have their initials, but those are just titles—every Carapace has a name, too, just like Jack Noir does. Carapaces live an awfully long time, though, and most aren’t exactly cloned to have stellar memories outside of a specific focus. Most of the time, they’re just referred to by their title, anyway. Most Carapaces that end up in exile forget their actual names very quickly.

As far as the four Exiles we see in Homestuck go:

• WQ is the exception; she remembers her name, but for the sake of all of the others (who don’t), she’ll lie about it if it’s ever brought up. When she’s alone she’ll write it in the sand over and over to help her remember.
• AR likes his initials better, if anything. The law is everything to him so he doesn’t even mind everything about him being related. Sometimes he has moments where he thinks “but it might be nice to know” but he represses them fast.
• PM thinks about her name most often out of all of them, and it makes her kind of sad. At the same time, she can’t help but feel like she’s letting go of the past with it, and that maybe it’s about moving on and starting something new.
• WV doesn’t think about his name much at all but when he does it really upsets him. He’s almost sure that he knows it, it’s on the tip of his tongue, but he pulls a blank every time and he feels like he’s lost a part of himself with it, but he just can’t remember no matter how hard he tries, so he’ll end up all stressed and upset and mopey in a corner for a while when he does.

On a side note about just having and remembering names, Carapaces that were cloned for things like bookkeeping and other things that involve needing to know about a lot of different kinds of things are more likely to remember their name for a long time.
